Abstract title: “Exploring new frontiers in fighting animal trypanosomiasis: assessing antitrypanosomal and (eco)toxicological characteristics of novel nucleoside-based leads”

OneHealthDrugs is a global network of scientists dedicated to advancing the discovery of drugs that combat vector-borne infections in both human and veterinary contexts while adhering to principles of ecological sustainability. This shared commitment to optimizing drug profiles and minimizing environmental impact is what drew me to attend this conference.

The conference, titled “advancements in structural and functional drug discovery for vector-borne diseases,” was held over three days in the first week of July in the beautiful city of Oxford. Throughout the event, several compelling presentations on drug discovery and vaccination were delivered, interspersed with opportunities for networking. Thanks to my supervisor, Prof. Guy Caljon, I was introduced to several scientists, which led to the formation of collaborations in drug discovery research with groups in the UK and Italy.

In addition, I had the privilege of presenting my work on drug discovery for African trypanosomiasis, titled “exploring new frontiers in fighting animal trypanosomiasis: assessing antitrypanosomal and (eco)toxicological characteristics of novel nucleoside-based leads,” which is set to be published later this year. The presentation was well-received, and I engaged in stimulating discussions during the breaks. Moreover, Oxford’s unique academic atmosphere added to the overall enjoyment of this trip!

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Zoetis and the BSPP board for awarding me the 2023 Zoetis Travel Grant. This grant significantly facilitated my attendance at this international conference, broadening my knowledge and expanding my professional network. I highly encourage other PhD students and BSPP members to apply for the Zoetis Travel Grant in the future. Overall, attending this conference was immensely beneficial to both my career and future research endeavors.
